"$ sudo apt-get install libstdc++5" eliminated all internal browser problems

Thank you for your advice. Now I can use Sametime as well as the internal browser, and the RSS feeds work, too.

In the Synaptic packet manager of my Ubuntu 8.04.1 I find the xulrunner versions 1.8.1.13 and 1.9.0.1, and they obviously work fine.
